This programme took choral arrangements of spirituals and placed them in various contexts, such as combinations with a mass by William Byrd, songs for soprano solo (including Barber's Hermit Songs) and readings from the Bible. In the centenary year of Sir Michael Tippett's birth, his "Five Negro Spirituals" from "A Child of Our Time" was a special highlight.

The Shakespeare programme took musical responses to Shakespeare's plays and sonnets from five centuries, starting with Morley and Johnson in the 17th century, reflecting the development of music in England in the 18th and 19th centuries, and focusing on Vaughan Williams' Three Shakespeare Songs in the 20th century. The 21st century was represented by a piece specially written by the Seattle-based composer Brian Higham.
